I am from Taiwan, and my background of immigrating to NYC has influenced my career path in mental health counseling. As an immigrant myself, I developed my passion for working with international students and Asian Americans who have been struggling with academic performance, and family challenges. I specialize in working with children, teens, and adults with various issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and adjustment difficulties. With a warm and empathetic approach, I provide a safe and compassionate environment to work collaboratively on any issue, including cultural identity, acculturation, parental conflict, job and life stress, and relationships.
About Peiwen
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
Before pursuing graduate education in the US, I had six years of experience working with psychiatric patients as a nurse at the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan. I truly believe that not only medication but also therapy is important for a client’s recovery. Therefore, I decided to become a therapist. As an international student in the US, I experienced many challenges including cultural shock, language barriers, academic expectations, learning styles as well as limited social connections. After graduation, I worked at an adult center and Child Center in NY. Most of the clients who I worked with are Asian. They usually felt left out because of the language barrier and struggles with general conflicts. As a result, with my personal and clinical experiences and cultural background, I can be a cultural bridge to help students adjust to a new environment and build a better life.
What should someone know about working with you?
During the intake session, I will use time to discover the reason why the potential client reaches out for help, understand the client’s background and establish rapport. In addition, I will explain informed consent and begin orientation to my therapeutic style and approach, such as the Strengths-based approach and CBT skills. After the intake session, I will plan future sessions and follow-ups, including scheduling the next session. In the beginning, I do not assign homework unless the client is ready and collaborative.
Who is your ideal client?
Some of my best clients would be returning to therapy regularly because I can understand their challenges and changes. As I recall my former minor client, was very shy and spoke in very low voices because of her fear of authority. Her grandmom wanted to improve her social anxiety and the client also wanted to learn how to speak up for herself in the school. Even though she was scared of coming to the office, she was still on time every week. She drew pictures as a matter of communication with me. Gradually, she was able to verbalize her feelings with me and walked with me to practice greeting with my other colleagues and supervisors.
Are there any aspects of your personal self, therapeutic approach, or viewpoints that might be slightly controversial or challenge norms?
I believe that our culture and early life experiences lead to where we are and impact our lives. Although memories are not always positive and can be painful, they are part of individuals, communities, and societies. I can engage clients with cultural heritage to enhance their understanding and appreciation of different cultures and lives. It can give some clients a sense of belonging and participation in something greater.

I am currently thinking of taking continued learning courses about the Internal Family system or Emotion-focused therapy (EFT). I believe that the trigger of clients’ issues comes from family conflicts and/or relationship issues. Therefore, I want to advance my knowledge of the internal family system which is a way of understanding personal and intimate relationships and guide to work. I also want to use EFT approaches to assist clients in gaining awareness of emotions and understanding them. In the future, clients will establish coping skills to face and manage emotions.
